BIO

My name is Courtney Schmidt but I’m known as Sparky! I have been riding since I was 5 years old. I started out as a hunter-jumper but 5 years ago I started barrel racing. I have learned to make do with what I have, and that happened to be a 13hh paint/Shetland cross pony named Elvis. We started out doing local gymkhanna and speed shows, but went on to NBHA and IBRA competing more in barrel racing. For being little he kept up with the big guys, he consistently ran 4D/3D in open races and 2D/3D in youth races. He was and still is very special to me and he has taught me more than any person could. 2 years ago I got a new horse to work towards the bigger goals that I had named Birdstone Gulch AKA, Dinero. In the short while I have had him he has also taught me a lot. Mainly that when something goes wrong in a run, he is the last to blame. It started out that I would train him and pattern him but I had decided to send him away to (in my opinion) one of the best trainers in Wisconsin, Carina Morris. I know he wasn’t an easy one but he is certainly worth it. My first year running it was hard to click with a larger horse, but towards the end we really started to click. I am very excited to start my second season running him!
I am very thankful that both of my parents support me and help me along the way to help me chase my dreams, and to have met so many great people in the barrel racing world!
